Guide to installing Micro Irrigation

When thinking of installing an irrigation system, sometimes knowing where to start can seem quite daunting. Here are some helpful tips and advice to set you on the right path.

TIPS:

• Contract a professional irrigation designer; insist on a system to suit your plants and your soil.
• Install efficient micro-irrigation emitters wherever possible.
• Install an irrigation controller with multiple programs, seasonal adjustment, and a rain switch.
• Mulch around your plants to conserve water in the soil.
• Irrigate to encourage deep roots - but don’t over-irrigate.
• Monitor your water use – you may need expert advice.
• Check and clean the various components of your system at the beginning and end of the irrigation season to make sure they are working properly.
• Install an inline filter at the start of your irrigation system to protect the emitters.
• On mains water system install a pressure reducer (175 kPa) onto the water supply to prevent pipe blowouts.
